Glossary of Common Hybrid Learning Terms

In order to gear up for remote learning and now for hybrid learning, SHS teachers have had to learn a number of new tech tools and a whole new vocabulary to describe their work. We know that all of the terms, applications, and vocabulary can be difficult for families. To that end, we have created a short but important glossary to ensure that all our students and families know some of the language associated with remote and hybrid learning.

Asynchronous learning: learning that takes place at a time and place of the student’s choosing, not at a dedicated time

Synchronous learning: learning that takes place at a dedicated time, and may include in-person or virtual learning

Google Meet: our school’s adopted video-conferencing platform, similar to Zoom

Google Classroom: our school’s adopted learning management system, where assignments and resources are posted

JumpRope: our school’s official gradebook, supports our proficiency-based grading system

Hybrid Learning: a school program that includes 2 days of in-person learning and 3 days of remote learning

Fully-remote Learning: a school program that includes 5 days of remote learning

Learning organizers: Google Docs maintained by teachers each week that include the expected assignments and participation, available here
